Match Review: Why India’s Middle-Order Controlled the Final Session at MCG

When lunch was called on Day 5 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia needed four wickets to level the series. India were effectively 18 runs ahead with only the lower order remaining.

What followed across the next 140 minutes was an extraordinary exhibition of psychological warfare. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar chose not to hit Cummins and Starc into the deep-set fielders, but instead defended with soft hands, allowing the ball to die harmlessly at their feet.

By the time Pat Cummins called in his boundary riders, Australia had burnt their reviews and their bowlers’ hamstrings. India walked off with the trophy safe in their grip.
