Rishabh Pant on the Psychology of Fourth-Inning Counters
Pant during the lunch interval: calm eyes, unorthodox grip, and an unwavering belief in taking down boundary riders.श्रेय: Cricket Samrat Portrait Studio

There is a peculiar stillness inside Rishabh Pant when an entire stadium is screaming for a defensive block. Where conventional coaching preaches survival, Pant sees empty pockets of turf.

"If the bowler has three fielders on the fence and nobody at mid-wicket, why am I supposed to nudge it to point for a maiden?" Pant asks with that trademark disarming grin. "Test cricket is five days long, but the moment you stop scoring, you hand the bowler a free license to aim at your throat."

From his historic counter-attack at the Gabba in 2021 to his twin centuries across England, Pant has rewritten the definition of the modern wicketkeeper-batter. In this long-form conversation, he walks through the mental resets he developed during his grueling 14-month rehabilitation following the 2022 accident.

"When you are lying in a hospital bed wondering if you will ever walk without crutches, worrying about a swinging ball at Headingley seems very small. Now, every single innings is just pure joy."

Fear in cricket is just stagnant energy. If you let it freeze your feet, you are out. If you channel it into bat speed, the pressure flips onto the bowler.
