Reading the cover
The July 2017 issue places two large player photographs in green and blue beside one another. A raised ball on the left and an Indian batter on the right frame a cover line about India’s defeat. The purple masthead and fine border hold the competing visual elements together.
The composition offers more than an image of the losing side. By showing the two teams together, it invites a reading of how the same match can remain in memory through different emotions. That is our interpretation of the visible design, rather than a quotation from the magazine’s original editorial.
Verified match context
The ICC’s contemporary report records Pakistan defeating India by 180 runs at The Oval on 18 June 2017 to win its first Champions Trophy. This supplies historical context for the July cover. The match date and the issue month are separate: the scan identifies July 2017, but does not establish a precise publication day.
An archive reading route
Look at the complete composition before returning to the headline. The scale of the player portraits and the force of the cover line show how a print cover can turn a sporting result into an immediate emotional response. Smaller images and the poster reference create additional points of entry into the printed object.
Open the original scan to inspect its lettering, photographs and uncropped edges. This newly written digital introduction provides a route into that historical page. Interior pages and transcriptions of the original articles are not currently available in this collection.
